Mea Culpa
1987 - 97
Steel / Rivets
Pulling Figure: 180cm H
Hanging Figure: 310cm H x 59cm W
Overall Height of Steel Support Girder: 4.3m
Two larger than lifesize figures are locked in a mutually dependant struggle
for survival. One figure hangs from a steel support whilst the other is pulling
on the rope to create an equalibrium, holding the tension : a clash of titans
where neither will yield.
The figures are constructed to illustrate what are in effect, complex, dynamic
and beautifully engineered machines involved in a dynamic movement with a
strong anatomical emphasis reinforcing the nature of their actions. The work
is an interpretation of the final conflict between Achilleus and Hector in Homers'
chronicle 'The Illiad', a monumental stuggle which is both a fight to the death but
also a fight for life.
